International medical graduates can apply for the national PHEM training program.

To be eligible to apply they must fulfil these criteria:

  1. Registered with the GMC
  2. Hold a UK national training number in one of the base specialties (emergency medicine, intensive care medicine or anaesthesia). This means that they must have been appointed to a national training program in a base specialty before they are able to apply for PHEM subspecialty training.

Once these criteria are met an application can be made through the national selection process.

It is advised the applicants contact one of the PHEM training program directors and read the applicants guide prior to making an application.

Experience gained in employment overseas may be accepted if an equivalence document has been completed by the medical supervisor for that post. Guidance on equivalence can be found here.
